Bungalows Thrive in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess!

Bungalow colonies have been a summer lifesaver for middle-class families for decades. While the advent of commercial aviation began a seismic shift for these communities, there are still some great, affordable places within 1-2 hours of the New York Metro area. Much is made of Upstate and Catskills locations, but for those who can't or don't want to travel 2-4 hours each way, here are some summer communities that you can visit on a day trip in the Spring.

With a plethora of shared amenities like pools, lakes, tennis and weekend entertainment, these are bargains compared to owning a private home in the Berkshires or the Hamptons.

If you want to add your "downstate" summer community, contact Michelle via the contact form (she owns a bungalow at Pine Lake Park and her family can't imagine summering anywhere else). Please click on photos for more info.

Rosmarins

Rosmarins - Bungalow colony located in Monroe, NY
Memorial Day through Labor Day: a collection of 100 small, whitewashed cottages in a bucolic setting less than one and a half hours from New York City.  The same family has owned the colony since 1942. Lake and a pool, screened-in porches, tree-swings and a day camp for the kids.
